How does a live course differ from an on-demand?
“Synchronous” is in (real time/live) and “Asynchronous” is (not in real time/pre-recorded).
Live education (Synchronous), whether it is live in person or live on-line, occurs in real time. Live education is scheduled for a specific time and must be completed at that time. Live courses, usually have a Q&A (question and answer) portion after the education is completed.
On-demand education (Asynchronous), on the other hand, is pre-recorded and can be completed by the participant at any time. They don’t have to complete the education at a specific time (such as 2pm on Tuesday 13 August 2024). Another thing which sets the two delivery methods apart is that On-Demand courses are required to have a summative assessment (true/false quiz) which the participant must successfully complete before member attendance/credit can be reported/awarded.
*Since Live and On-Demand courses have different delivery methods and requirements for completion by the participant, the education providers must submit the courses as separate delivery types. A course which is going to be delivered live cannot be submitted for On-Demand delivery and vise-versa. They are not interchangeable. Failure to submit a course for the appropriate delivery type can be grounds for a provider audit, as it directly violates the AIA CES Standards.
